Some random Guardian BTS trivia!
For the "Backstory" square on my Guardian Bingo card, a small collection of Guardian lore from the early days of filming. (I'm not breaking any new ground here, just assembling some stuff from here and there!)
First of all! Zhu Yilong was one of the winners at the 13th TV Drama South Awarding Ceremony in January of 2017. According to Wikipedia, he won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in The Shaw Eleven Lang. The Weibo tag for the event has quite a bit of Long-ge content if you scroll. In April of 2017, filming for Guardian started. Zhu Yilong was 29, and Bai Yu was 27. Pictures have surfaced that presumably show early concepts of the outfits (and hair and make-up). I cannot stress enough how close together these were taken:

Yeah, I don't get it either. Sorcery.
Zhu Yilong had just finished filming As Flowers Fade and Fly Across The Sky when he joined the Guardian cast. He accepted the role to help out a friend when the original Shen Wei actor had to drop out. The actor was Ren Yankai, and I think we're all thanking the heavens for those scheduling conflicts (no offense). 😄
According to The Primer, Bai Yu spent 2016 and early 2017 filming The Fated General, Zhao Ge, and The Founding of an Army. Only the last one has actually been released; it aired in 2017. At this point, The Fated General might just never be freed from censorship jail. (Bai Yu's role in Zhao Ge seems rather small, but looking at the main cast, it's toast now anyway.)
Zhu Yilong had learned about sleeve garters when he filmed Eternal Wave (where he played Cen Zimo), and thought they'd work well for Shen Wei. It's also accepted lore that he contributed some of his own clothes to Shen Wei's wardrobe, although I can't remember seeing a definite source on this.
Both of them read the novel to prepare for their roles, which is kind of its own amazing thought. Bai Yu's reaction to the novel was, "Can you even film this? Can this be aired?!" (MOOD.) He accepted the role when he was told it was turned into a bromance for the drama. (And we know how that turned out.)
Apparently, the "Shen Wei applies ointment to Zhao Yunlan's arm" was the very first scene they shot together. There's a brief behind-the-scenes video of the early days, and a longer video collecting moments from the start of filming to the day they wrapped. Many iconic BTS clips in there!
In conclusion: babies.
That's all I have for now! I might add things as I come across/remember more lore, but you can also find a ton of information in the aforementioned Bai Yu & Zhu Yilong Primer and the Bai Yu & Zhu Yilong Social Media Timeline by qikiqtarjuaq. There's also a great collection of Guardian resources by

Thank you for this collection, this is great. They were so young ... and much as I adore Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan, both actors look even more gorgeous nowadays. *g*
I heard the rumour about Zhu Yilong's wardrobe as well, but never saw any actual evidence either, so I don't personally believe it. (I also heard arguments for it based on Shen Wei's style being inconsistent, but I don't actually think it is, so. *g*)

I certainly wouldn't be surprised if some of Shen Wei's nicer things were taken from Zhu Yilong's closet. Convenience, budget reasons, whatever, I still want some actual sources. 😄

and i *do* believe some of the actors were wearing their own clothes. there's just no way they weren't for some of the scenes. (xiao guo! above all, lin jing.)

Some of the actors definitely could have conceivably shown up to work in their own clothes. 😄 Shoutout to the Snoop Dogg shirt! (Was it a Snoop Dogg shirt?)

there's literally no way these extras weren't just told, "show up in whatever you have that's Fancy"

"Can you even film this? Can this be aired?!"
I remember seeing an interview with z1l where he says "I'm sure we can make sparks fly" (about him and Bai Yu). It always makes me sad that he wouldn't be able to say anything like this anymore now.
