Meme: First Lines
Saw this on
eirenical's Tumblr, felt like looking at my writing, and here we are!
Rules: Make your own post, then list the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favourite opening line.
I didn't list the few scattered fics from over a decade ago and only went with the things I wrote this year, which turned out to be 19 fics and ficlets and somewhere around 66,000 words. 😳 Really went quite feral for Guardian and related things, I GUESS.
Ficlets
Tactical Advantage
(The Rebel RPF, Guardian RPF)
knew it would get dark
(Guardian, SW/ZYL)
Savior Complex
(Granting You a Dreamlike Life/Memory Lost, Luo Fusheng/Han Chen)
(a quiet place)
(Guardian RPF, BY/ZYL)
I like to start in the middle of things, just because I'm bad at plot, i.e. getting from point A to point B through a logical progression of actions and events. I can only do a series of moments and fill in any narrative gaps with flashbacks. Also, apparently I've written a lot of porn.
So, I usually get an idea for a scene and just put down some flimsy intro sentence, so I can get to the dialogue/feelings/sex. And then sometimes that (or a version of it) becomes the fic's first line! Pretty sure that's true for all the ficlets.
Sometimes I also need to explain things to myself, kind of work things out as I go, and that's how the pair of Weilan fics (and those first lines) happened. Also, I think, that first Han Chen/Luo Fusheng fic. How would that even work! Well, canonically he has trouble sleeping, so let's do something with that.
I think if I had to pick a favorite, it would be the opening of "we both swam out to sea", which I'm pretty sure came to me in the shower, as most ideas do.

Ficlets
- He's done with most of his scenes for the day and is taking a break in one of the folding chairs in the corner when Zhu Zhu sits down next to him, careful not to wrinkle her dress.
- [bright lights when i see you], The Rebel RPF, G, 600 words - It was just his luck, although luck was maybe the wrong word.
- [longing for the storm to still], Guardian (SW/ZYL), T, 900 words - He returns from the bathroom to find Keeley petting Jamie's hair, running her fingers through it absentmindedly as she scrolls down her phone with the other hand.
- [and know the place for the first time], Ted Lasso (Roy/Keeley/Jamie), T, 630 words - It hadn't just been embarrassing, although it had also been that.
- [a hand to hold, a song to sing], Guardian (SW/ZYL), G, 550 words - Once, he fell to his knees before the Envoy, maybe from tiredness, maybe in gratitude, maybe for something he couldn't bring himself to name.
- [higher calling], Guardian (CSZ/SW), G, 360 words - At night, in dreams, he remembers his life before she found him.
- calm and blazing both existing, The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, Gen, 600 words
Tactical Advantage
(The Rebel RPF, Guardian RPF)
- It was mostly the script.
- Reconnaissance, WY/ZYL, E, 4200 words - He was tired all the time.
- Route, Area, Zone, WY/ZYL + ZYL/BY, E, 4900 words
knew it would get dark
(Guardian, SW/ZYL)
- He shouldn't, of course. That's the whole point.
- we both swam out to sea, ZYL POV, M, 2600 words - The truth is, he did sleep.
- everything to help you stay, SW POV, M, 2600 words
Savior Complex
(Granting You a Dreamlike Life/Memory Lost, Luo Fusheng/Han Chen)
- He doesn't like to be alone at night.
- start a big fire in a one room apartment, E, 6000 words - It's not that he wants to punch Han Chen all of the time.
- six, E, 2000 words - He's almost asleep when he hears Han Chen come in, his boots miraculously quiet on the tiles.
- five, M, 2000 words - He likes to hold the record in his hand for a moment before he places it on the turntable.
- two, M, 2000 words
(a quiet place)
(Guardian RPF, BY/ZYL)
- They have the late evening off, which happens rarely enough, and they're back at the hotel where they technically have two separate rooms, not like Zhu Yilong has seen much of his.
- If you're near, it's quiet, E, 14000 words - There's a flight coming in shortly after six, and Zhu Yilong is ready.
- wish list (you're a new line), E, 8800 words - He's been moving from project to project for so long, it's like some kind of muscle memory kicks in once he leaves the Guardian set.
- (that nothing is faded), M, 2300 words - It's still dark outside when he wakes up.
- Something bigger than the sky, E, 9300 words - The blindfold is new.
- deep water, a little deeper than you thought, E, 3600 words
