Fanmix: Higher Ground
I finished the Shen Wei mix! Which I started collecting songs for, oh, five episodes in? The remaining pile is still 30 songs and counting, because I have a lot of feelings about Shen Wei and his feelings for Zhao Yunlan.
Usually I just post these to AO3 and hope for a kudos or two, but hey, now that I'm back on DW I can actually ramble on about the process~ here. \o/
Which in this case was super fun once I started putting some songs in order and found it was mostly female singers, so then it had to be *all* female singers, obviously. (I like to make things harder for myself.) I really wanted it to be all pretty and soaring and actually kind of uniform sounding? In contrast, I'm trying to make the ZYL counterpart a little more rock/pop and varied and playful. Also, it has to be all male voices now. So that's going great.
(I once managed to put together a soundtrack for the whole Captive Prince trilogy in which all the Laurent songs were female voices and all the Damen songs were male. Otherwise it's kind of hard to signify POV changes when it's so many songs, so now I kind of think about POV in those terms.)
Another thing that happens is that I find a song that I think is perfect for the character or ship and then try to build the whole fanmix around it, in terms of mood and genre of music and such. I'd say in this case it was "Back to the Sky" (track 2), which is so unspeakably sad and so beautiful. You know, like Shen Wei.
(I also try, for shippy mixes, to find a track that works as The Sex Song, and I think this one really works. So that was also happy-making.)
A million thanks to
aurum for yanking me into this PIT OF EMOTIONS fandom and also giving the mix a beta listen, and to
kernezelda for the screencaps I used for the cover. That would have taken me ages otherwise!

Also - lol, I have that thing too! Where it's like, "oh hey, here's an accidental coincidence/convergence, clearly this is a ~thing now". It makes things harder but it also adds a structure that can be nice.

And yes, exactly! It wasn't a thing until two seconds ago but now it's a THING! Also when I have four of something and *need* a fifth. 😅 I definitely like the structure it adds to the whole artistic ~process.

Just coming to say I didn't know most of these songs before (actually - any of them, I think, lol) and they are lovely. I particularly love the (male?) chorus section of You Made Me Real a LOT - that definitely pings my Shen Wei sensibilities. Nope, now I'm hearing it again, not male, there's definitely female voices in there, too. But the structure of the melody and the texture of the humming chorus is lovely.

Anyway, I love him. 😄
And yay, I'm glad, and I super love that song too! The humming adds so much Mood.
