Wang Yang on a farm!

Not like this is becoming a Wang Yang blog or anything, but OH MY GOD YOU GUYS. There's a reality show called Become a Farmer, which FOR SOME REASON Wang Yang joined as a guest for a day or two, and the all-boys cast was completely OBSESSED with him.

Xiaohongshu gave me a clip from the show a few days ago, and once I clicked on it, the algorithm kept giving me more, including? some shippy?? fan edits??? I understand zero Chinese, so I have no idea what's going on in most of these (except for the visually obvious), but here's some clips:

» these boys are so loud
» demanding goodbye hugs from daddy Yang-ge
» making up a cp on the spot
» panda hat cp
» more besotted boy in panda hat

Wang Yang chose that last clip to post about the show on his Weibo and all the top comments appear to be farm boys B E G G I N G him to come back. One literally just went "Come! Often!" with 19 exclamation points. Another started his comment with "I miss you", and Wang Yang replied "I miss you too," giving that lucky boy some major heart palpitations, I'm sure.

It sounds like he's either supposed to come back for the harvest, or they're just really, really hoping he will, and he's politely humoring them.

Either way, I'm in love with this whole situation. Give Wang Yang a gaggle of besotted boys, it's what he DESERVES.

:DDD

These clips are ADORABLE, thank you for sharing! The kid with the panda hat really does seem pretty obsessed. XD Damn, I never watch reality shows but I might have to make an exception for whatever episodes of this he's in, if I can find them...

I can't tell from the clips whether or not he expects to actually go back -- in the first one he says he hopes he'll have the chance to come back, and talks about how "if" he (does? can? were to?) meet them all again at the arranged time and share in eating [a list of vegetables that I assume he helped plant], he'll feel very lucky/happy, but I can't tell whether this is a far-fetched imaginary "if" or whether it's something he actually expects to happen. Ditto for the comments on his Weibo (omg he actually posts replies on Weibo???), it sounds like there's a chance he'll go back but it's all very "if" and "I hope" so maybe it'll depend on his schedule at harvest time or something...

Oh, and in the first video he also gets kind of poetic about the sunset, saying something like "when the sun is setting and I stand behind [the farm boys], seeing them in front of me in this light, I feel a bit moved; although the sun is going down, I feel that they're growing up." Someone on his Weibo commented on liking this part and omg, his reply: "The setting sun and I are on the same trajectory, but it's the opposite for them." Wang Yang, you are forty-six what is this nonsense! But he also says that being around them made him feel young, so there's that at least...

(Also the comment on Weibo that says "miss you" also calls Wang Yang 猛男, which is a word I had not heard before but apparently it translates to "strong, masculine man; hunk; beefcake." XDDD Like literally the comment is "Wang Yang, miss you, beefcake when are you coming home?" "阳哥 想你了 猛男什么时候回家")

Two things before I get started on my workday because you made me curious and I looked it up!
I think this is the episode: iq.com/play/种地吧第2季-2024-3-29-2cdswaq8odk . Not sure how much of it is Wang Yang, but some of it sure seems to be! I'm looking forward to giving it a watch.
猛男 also reminds me of the Internet giving Zhu Yilong shit when he was filming, I think his rock-climbing one? and declaring that a 猛男 was what he was going to be; he immediately received a pile of memes calling him a 萌男 instead, which is pronounced the same way but means basically "adorable guy, cute man, sweetie-pie."

Another thank you for finding the episode! Added to my watch list.

萌男 [...] which is pronounced the same way but means basically "adorable guy, cute man, sweetie-pie."

Awww. <3 (Aaaand adding 猛男/萌男 to my list of "Chinese words that if you say them with the wrong tone they mean basically the opposite"...)

Okay, since we're all being completely normal about this... I found 猛男! It's at 52:33 and 3 guesses who says it. XD

"fierce" and "male", which! Applied to this smiley middle-aged man in wellies waxing poetic about the sunset is HILARIOUS.

LOL yes, my thoughts exactly! XD

Okay, so after watching the episode I do think it's probably an in-joke (maybe recurring on the show?). Early on, the guy who brought Wang Yang (who seems to be a regular part of the show but I guess his job is to bring guests? he later mentions having brought other guests and jokes about how he thinks all the guests have been more competent at farming than he is) tries out some kind of plowing(?) machine and one of the young guys jokingly calls him "muscle man" (in English; the Chinese subs translate it very literally as 肌肉男). Later when they're all hauling fertilizer bags, someone calls Wang Yang a 猛男 when he hefts up one of the bags (52:33), and later the panda-hat kid calls himself a 猛男 (lol), and then during dinner the handler(?) guy asks who worked with Wang Yang in the afternoon, and the panda-hat kid raises his hand and then shouts "猛男幫舉手," which is like, "raise your hands, hunk group!" and I guess everyone who worked with Wang Yang (plus Wang Yang himself) all raise their hands. So it looks like they're all joking about being macho dudes out there doing manly farm work. XD

IMO this does not make it any less adorable that Wang Yang apparently got readily adopted into their macho man group (and also that the Weibo message isn't even just "miss you when are you coming back" but literally "when are you coming home." To say nothing of the other guy's 19 exclamation points. XD

Also more re: his comments on his age -- when he first arrives, the guy who brought him puts one of the other guys "in charge of assigning Yang-ge work," and Wang Yang is immediately like, "I can do whatever, no need to treat me as a middle-aged person" (中年人). <3 But for the moment all they need him to do is sit and help put plants in pots, which is probably for the best since he turns out to have a fever (and knows it! and keeps saying he's fine but also keeps very much not declining when people offer for him to go rest and take medicine...).

Aaaaaaaaa! Thank you for the translations! This is not helping me get over this, omg.

Like literally the comment is "Wang Yang, miss you, beefcake when are you coming home?"

!!! I feel like the 19 exclamation points right now.

Well... This is no way diminishes the Yang-ge Yang-ge effect because it's there! But the boys greeted the older guy as Zhang-laoshi and seemed to know him already. I went poking around and he's Zhang Shaogang, who's mainly a TV show host, and he'd been there before. His role seems to be bringing occasional guests to visit.

I'm still resisting the AI-translations, so I'm not sure, but part of the "hunk" appreciation may have come from Wang Yang going out to help them after the fever. It seemed like they weren't expecting him to come out and do heavy work after that but he did. 🥹

Eeeee! Yes, this is all important context! DAD.

FYI, the top Weibo comment was from Glasses Kid who operates the drone, and the second Weibo comment is from Panda Hat. Some of the other boys are in the top replies but I didn't put names to faces. :D

I watched it (with some fast-forwarding because it's nearly 2 hours long...) and can report:

Wang Yang shows up around 17:53. After they take temperatures and his is 39.1°C, they take him back to where they're staying, and I think he doesn't show up again until ~45:30. From there is the longest stretch of seeing him. He says something in English at ~55:34. (There is random English from the young guys throughout, so this isn't out of place.) And then around ~1:16:00 he shows up again for their dinner and stays until around ~1:32:00.

Panda hat is Li Hao.

P.S./ iQiyi has "AI-generated" subtitles in English and other languages. I turned the English ones off because I found them distracting.

Thank you for finding the times! I saw something in one of the comments on Weibo about his having a fever and was wondering about that -- from the comments it sounded like he'd gone ahead with the show anyway, but from your description it sounds like they didn't let him. Which makes much more sense, though it's a pity it means he's not on the show all that much! I'll still check out his scenes, though. <3

Oh no. XD And probably no Chinese subs, either...

Yeah, he might've not been in the show as much as they'd planned because of the fever. He goes to the hostel-like place where the guys stay and they give him a place to rest until later the same day when he comes out to help again.

There are Chinese hardsubs throughout, the way they do them for these kinds of reality/variety shows: in a stylized font and with the name of the person speaking. Like in the last clip that's linked to - the whole show has text like that.

[personal profile] grayswandir 2024-04-01 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've watched it now! And yay, I'm so glad there were hardsubs -- I wouldn't have understood much of anything just from the audio, but I'm okay with this subtitle font (a lot of stylized Chinese fonts are completely unreadable to me, but this one didn't seem too bad).

You may have already gotten all this, but re: the fever situation, I don't think they were taking everyone's temperature -- it seems like there was one guy who had a fever (who I guess this keeps happening to?), so the panda-hat kid asked for a thermometer to check that one guy's temperature, which is 38.7, and they disagree about whether that's a low or a high fever, and then Wang Yang cuts in to say anything above 38.5 is high, and then asks for the thermometer to check his own temperature. Panda-hat kid is like "Wait are you joking?" and Wang Yang says he's dizzy (头晕乎乎, later repeated as 头晕沉沉*) and has felt hot since (at least?) yesterday (maybe longer? he also says 从北京 "from/since Beijing" and 好多天了已经 "it's been several/many days already" and says there were viruses going around among the people he was filming with in Beijing) but says he didn't realize he was that hot. (Also I think the reason the panda-hat kid takes the thermometer from him is because he's struggling to read it without his glasses.) But then he says he'll just go take some medicine and he'll be fine. It's not clear how long he's gone, maybe just briefly? or maybe a while, idk, but when he comes back out, the other guys are just about to take a break after lunch, so they tell him to go rest some more, which he seems perfectly willing to do (although he does decline the offer of laying down with a blanket on the couch XD "I'll just lean here" "you can lie down" "no no I'm not going to sleep, I'll just sit for a while, just call me whenever" "okay but if you do sleep here's a blanket" "no I'm not going to sleep"...) ... and then when he comes out later like "where is everyone? I thought they were working and I should come help" it turns out everyone else is asleep. XD

So yeah I think they were impressed with his helping them haul all the bags later and being pretty energetic and very cheerful the whole time. The panda-hat kid asks him if he's okay while they're working (你这样不难受吗? 54:03) and Wang Yang doesn't exactly answer the question, just says it would be embarrassing/he'd lose face (丢人) if he was "like this" (这样) on his first day working when the other guys have already been doing this for three days (I guess -- I didn't watch enough of the rest of the show to get any context about what the "three days" refers to, but it sounds like he's comparing how long he's been working with how long they have).

*I'm not sure what either of these suffixes do exactly; Wiktionary says 乎乎 is an "expressive suffix for monosyllabic adjectives" but 头晕 is not monosyllabic so either that's a fake rule or Wang Yang is ignoring it...

Thank you for all the additional context! <3

Yes, thankfully, this font is not bad. I could read my usual 3 random words out of 20. T__T

I've rewatched it and gleaned the main parts, but not the details, like Wang Yang having just worked with people who were sick. :( It does seem like 猛男 is an in-joke on the show, but it's still adorable they put Yang-ge in the 猛男 group. I'm pretty sure it's Panda Hat who calls him 猛男. Panda Hat also calls him "39°C 大哥" at 54:06. I can't even with those two.

I've bopped around other episodes and I think the "three days" refers to how long the boys have doing a particular kind of work. (Maybe?) Because the guys have been on the farm for 52 days when Wang Yang visits.
